Telegraphy
"A gorgeously strange work of art."
– Lydia Kiesling, author of Mobility and The Golden Stat
All her life, Annie has been haunted by visions. As young girl growing up in Pakistan, she tries to live a typical life. She goes to college in Karachi and gets a job as a model for a travel company. She goes on tour with a band and begrudgingly marries one of its members, despite her love for the troubled lead singer, Adam. But she can't seem to escape the strange visions that follow her, and the illnesses no doctor can explain.
Annie is attuned to the body as a receiver of signals across time and space, and her narrative is interwoven with Vesalius stealing the corpse of a hanged man, a visit to the house of the seventeenth-century Dutch anatomist Frederik Ruysch, correspondence between far-flung friends in the nineteenth-century Ottoman Empire, a family’s centuries-long dispersal following an earthquake in Kibyra in 23 CE, and a man stepping onto a landmine in contemporary Waziristan.
A lyrical, strange, and stunning new work, Telegraphy breaks down boundaries and borders, breaks open our sense of reality, ultimately asking: What haunts us, and why?
